Za Xi Duo Jie of Qinghai Province won the 2006 CCTV China Economic Celebrities-Public Welfare award.

On 2006 Jan 20th, the CCTV China Economic Celebrities award presentation ceremony was held.The Association’s Deputy General Secretary Za Xi Duo Jie won the Public Welfare award.It was the 1st time the environmental protector of our province won this award.

China Economic Celebrities award was called the ‘Oscar’ Award of the China economic sector.The selection started same time last year in 5 core cities of the five main districts: the Northern, Eastern, Western, Southern & Central parts of the country. 112 top figures in the economic field were nominated & finally 23 were selected as candidates for the award.Za Xi Duo Jie; Zhao Yungliang, Board Chairman & CEO of Inner Mongolia Dong Da Mongolia group; Wang Zhentao, Board Chairman & CEO of Ao Kang groupwere selected as candidate for the Public Welfare award. On line voting showed that Za Xi Duo Jie won 58% of the votes.

Za Xi Duo Jie had been the secretary of Suo Nan DaJie, who founded the Association. The Association is a NGO in the Tibet area & has been aiming at helping the Tibetan communities to conserve the environment on their own accord.Za Duo went around the pastoral areas in Qinghai Yushu & Sichuan from 2005 to 2006 in the ‘environment promotion automobile’.Under his help, more & more Tibetans realize the importance of environmental protection .

Za Xi Duo Jie is not a wealthy guy but in the selection he won over the candidates in the business sector.Because in these years he has been persistently & silently establishing, running, solidifying & expanding green communities in his home village.

Za Xi Duo Jie is a representative of China’s Green NGO. He is an environmental protector who really focuses on ‘human’. This is different from ‘environment fighter’.Understanding his fellow herdsmen’s love for the wild yaks, he set up green communities in his home village, Cao chi. He encouraged the herdsmen to participate in the wild lives inspection & thus aroused their awareness of conserving their home environment.

The herdsmen may not know more about environmental protection but they know that reared yak & wild yak breed stronger, higher quality offspring, the offspring have better immune system.This is a simple understanding, but it makes the herdsmen voluntarily let wild yak inhabit in their pasture.

Benefits are the best motives

I had much intercourse with Za Xi Duo Jie. In doing environmental protection, he is willing to accept loneliness, he does not go for fame or wealth & he works for the mankind.He is a model for other environmental protection organizations & people.

Last year, he & CI (an international environmental protection NGO) started the ‘Agreed Conservation Areas’ Project in the 3 Great Rivers sources region. This project was a supplement to the Chinese government’s macroscopic involvement in conservation

On Jan 20th, 44 years old Za Xi Duo Jie won the 2006 CCTV China Economic Celebrities-Public Welfare award.From 1992 to 2000, a small group of people & a large flock of sheep rocked China. The sheep were the ‘pride of Ke Ke Xi Li’ -the Tibetan antelope & the people were with 2 names: Working Committee for the West or Wild Yak team.

In 1992, to enhance the development & conservation of Ke Ke Xi Li, Working Committee for the West was set up in the Zhi Duo County of Yushu Prefecture, Qinghai Province.Tibetan cadre Jie Nan. Suo Nan Da Jie was Secretary of the Party Committee. The China government was then formally involved in the environmental protection of Ke Ke Xi Li.The 1st target was the endangered Tibetan antelope. Ha Xi. Za Xi Duo Jie was the 1st lot of volunteers recruited by the Working Committee & he was then the secretary.2 years later, on Jan 18th, Suo Nan Da Jie was shot dead by the poachers.Za Xi Duo Jie then left Ke Ke Xi Li & more things happened there.

Working Committee for the West was then re-organized & was renamed as wild yak team but it was dissolved several years later.The whole country was in an uproar & then the film <Ke Ke Xi Li> made by Lu Chuan was popular all around China. Protagonist of the film was Working Committee for the West. Suo Nan Da Jie Natural Protection Station was finally set up on the Qinghai-Tibet highway.The Tibetan antelope was also selected as one of the mascots of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.The voice for conservation was higher than ever, but there has been no news of Za Xi Duo Jie

Late in the night before the result of China Economic Celebrities- Public Welfare award was announced, in the home of a friend in Beijing, Za Xi Duo Jie was interviewed by <Wai Tan News>. Having gone across the country for a long time, this beard Kang Ba fellow had already had not too much Kang Ba accent in his mandarin. He had been a teacher, had shouldered gun & had been a government official. He quit his government job to become a volunteered environment protector.Thinking of the past, he only repeatedly said, “My home village is very remote, thus there is not too much choices in life, I’m very grateful that I can lead such a life.”
